U.S. crude futures up more than $4 ahead of OPEC

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. crude futures rose more than $4 on Monday, briefly touching $76.00 a barrel amid expectations that OPEC will cut output at its Friday meeting and as heating oil futures strengthened on the prospect of cooler temperatures.

Stronger global stock markets also helped fuel some optimism that the economic slowing may not be as severe as has been recently feared.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange at 1:44 p.m. EDT, November crude was up $3.39, or 4.7 percent, at $75.24 a barrel, trading from $71.77 to $76.00.
