Speaking at the 4th Annual Transmission and Distribution Forum in Berlin (29th to 30th September), José María Llopis, DS2 COO reveals how DS2 technology used in Smart Grids increases competitiveness, improves energy efficiency and meets the reliability rules that require utilities to ensure a quality and secure supply of energy.
Smart grid networks support a range of applications. These include outage management, advanced real time metering, real time load management, or condition–based maintenance. Some utilities add client side broadband applications including Internet access, video surveillance or traffic monitoring. DS2 Smart Grid technology supports advanced two–way real–time communications enabling support for all these activities while adding the ability to plan and manage the network, with support for real time fault detection.
Jose Maria Llopis stated, "DS2 has built in the highest–grade security mechanisms and quality of service protocols to safeguard two–way communication on such a sensitive asset as the energy grid. A special MAC layer for Smart Grid applications increases the capillarity of the network to reach each grid element, and enables easy plug and play installation on the Low Voltage network. Dependence on external operators is eliminated facilitating proactive network management and increasing reliability by enabling early detection of possible faults".
