Experience Biotechnology Firsthand: BioTech4U -BIOTECHNICA 2008 Program for Schoolchildren

"BioTech4U" is the new accompanying program for schoolchildren at Europe´s largest biotechnology trade fair BIOTECHNICA held from October 7 through 9, 2008. The youth initiative will be aimed at 12th–grade pupils who are particularly interested in mathematical and natural–science subjects and courses. To this end, Deutsche Messe AG has made its own hall available, right next to BIOTECHNICA. "The lack of upcoming talent and specialized staff is an increasingly burning issue for the biotech sector. As the leading European fair, BIOTECHNICA can make a substantial contribution toward inspiring young people to take up biotechnology and help them choose the right study subject", says Stephan Kühne, member of the Board of Directors of Deutsche Messe AG, Hannover.

Touch - try out - discuss

BioTech4U provides a comprehensive insight into modern–day biotechnology, and encourages people to join in. Biotech researchers from German universities will be providing inside information and introducing current issues relating to their work - all geared to target groups and illustrated using graphic examples. The pupils will set off on a voyage of discovery into the world of biosciences, and learn where and how biotechnology is implemented in research.

Biotech companies and research institutes will be unveiling the latest technology, which pupils can try out. In on–site laboratories, Biotech4U participants will have the opportunity to savor the world of research firsthand and conduct biotechnological experiments. Science Centers will present exhibits to convey molecular–biological knowledge in a fun way. Furthermore, pupils visiting the BIOTechnikum, the rolling information and dialog center of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in Hall 9, will also be able to discover biotechnology for themselves in an interactive exhibition.

During one–to–one talks, biotech experts from the worlds of science and business will be giving tips on choosing trades or study courses, explaining job descriptions in biotechnology and introducing attractive career paths. In addition, visitors will be able to exchange views directly with the experts on controversial topics such as stem–cell research and green genetic engineering.

The program for schoolchildren in Hall 8 will be held on all three days from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. A visit is particularly recommended for those following intensive biology and chemistry courses and their teachers. Participation is free, and 400 pupils can attend per day. The third day is already fully booked up. Therefore, the organizer recommends that interested parties register for the first two days well in advance. A registration form is available on the information portal biotechnologie.de, an initiative of BMBF. Schools and teachers must organize travel to and from the event themselves. An allowance to help cover travel costs may be granted on request.

BioTech4U is promoted by BMBF. The event is supported by the Association of Biology, Biosciences and Biomedicine in Germany (VBIO), the working circle of German BioRegions and the biotechnologie.de information platform. You can find detailed information on the program at www.biotechnologie.de/biotech4u.
