Every day more than 300,000 girls suffer harassment, violence and assault in connection with school. Such assaults often take place in secret, and the perpetrators are rarely sanctioned. Plan International Norway uses strong measures to highlight this brutal reality.
62 million girls are missing from classrooms around the world. Violence, abuse and harassment are some of the major reasons why girls drop out of school.
On 20 September Plan kicks off the 2015 Because I am a Girl campaign to support all the girls who are victims of harassment and abuse in school – on average four every second, more than 300,000 every day. The perpetrators are rarely punished, while the girls have to live with the consequences – trauma, shame, stigmatisation, unwanted pregnancy and a ruined future.
In the course of 24 hours, Plan will flood the Internet with four pictures a second of assaults on school girls. Plan will demonstrate in real time the many assaults that take place every day, for the world to open its eyes.
“We will be using all available digital channels and strong images to make people react and get involved. The Internet has given us a unique opportunity to highlight the extent of violence against and abuse of school girls,” says Kjell Erik Øie, Secretary General, Plan International Norway.
My Law – to mobilise more good people than there are evil acts
Plan wants to mobilise all good forces in this world to adopt My Law, which is a personal commitment to combat violence against school girls.
“My Law will send out a loud signal to the world leaders that we no longer accept abuse of girls at school. We demand that legislation banning violence against school children must be enforced in all countries, for the girls to have a safe learning environment being able to complete their education and contribute to community development, says Kjell Erik Øie.
The ambition is to mobilise more than 300,000 people to adopt My Law every day during the campaign period. Plan wants to prove that there are more good people in the world than the number of evil acts against school girls.
