Mongolia confirms MPRP wins majority in parliament

ULAN BATOR (Reuters) - Mongolia's election commission confirmed on Monday that the ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) had won a clear majority in parliament in a June 29 vote, where fraud allegations had led to violence.

The MPRP won 39 seats in the 76-seat Great Hural, with 25seats going to the main opposition Democratic Party and two tosmaller parties.

The results for the remaining 10 seats were in dispute andwould be recounted, the commission said.

The 10 seats are in three constituencies, though parliamentcan meet with only three-quarters of seats filled, according toMongolian law.

"We have introduced 66 seats to the president and we havetold him there are three constituencies in dispute for which wehave no final result," said election commission chief Batgulga.

He added that of the three constituencies, recounts areunderway in two, and in one there is a police probe, though hegave no details and did not say how long the recounts wouldtake.

The MPRP's majority government raises hopes it will have amandate to push through mining deals that could provide a hugeeconomic windfall to the country of less than 3 million, manyof whom are nomadic herders on its vast grasslands.

Allegations of election fraud led to a riot in early Julywhich killed at least five people and prompted the president todeclare a state of emergency, resulting in a period ofpolitical stalemate that has been a test for the young, CentralAsian democracy.

Batgulga said he was aware there could be disappointmentand unhappiness with the results.

"In these cases, people have to take their complaints tothe courts to be decided."
