Major Electric Utilities Propose a Vision for Achieving Climate Goals

The Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP), whose members are eleven of the major electricity companies in the world, announced it is preparing a report that will provide the industry’s systemic view of technologies and its precise vision on the role these technologies can have in reducing global CO2 emissions. This report, led by GSEP member Électricité de France (EDF), will be a major contribution of the electricity industry to the climate negotiations discussions culminating next year in Paris.

“As the world’s largest electric utilities, the members of GSEP have the legitimacy to provide a fact-based, expert view on technologies and how electricity can be part of the solution to the climate change challenge,” says Claude Nahon, Senior Vice President of Sustainable Development at EDF. “Our aim is to provide government negotiators at the climate change discussions with high-level policy recommendations that take into account a systemic view of technologies in the electricity industry in order to ensure that the right conditions are in place for the successful decarbonisation of the global economy.”

The 20th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP20) in Lima is mobilizing action from governments, businesses and civil society towards a new climate change agreement providing the right platform for GSEP to share the roadmap for the preparation of the report. Starting this December in Beijing, China, GSEP will lead a series of stakeholder meetings in 5 different regions of the world. The purpose of these meetings is to share the key findings of the report with selected high-level experts and enrich the work with as many local and specific elements as possible to ensure the report reflects a bottom-up contribution to the negotiations with concrete solutions.

“This is an ambitious effort by the electricity sector to make a major contribution to climate change negotiations,” says Martine Provost, Executive Director of GSEP. “We acknowledge that electricity is part of the solution and with this report we are bringing together our expertise with local perspectives from other experts around the world to provide the most comprehensive and systemic view of how the electricity sector can contribute to address climate change.”

The report will be presented by EDF to the French government in Paris before the climate negotiations in 2015.
