NEW YORK (Reuters) - An unknown volume of oil leaked from BP Plc's Whiting, Indiana, refinery into nearby Lake Michigan on Monday afternoon, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management confirmed on Tuesday.
The leak started from a cooling water outfall at the refinery at 5:30 p.m. EDT (2130 GMT) on Monday afternoon, said Dan Goldblatt, a public information officer with the department.
The leak was contained as of early Tuesday morning and officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Indiana environmental regulator were on site, Goldblatt said.
