Diesel Progress International magazine has named Volvo as its 2013 Newsmaker of the Year.
Volvo was cited primarily for its series of major new on- and off-highway product developments and global strategic moves. The company’s increasing embrace of YouTube, which included videos in which a company president was seen dangling atop a truck high over Gothenburg harbor and a hamster was used to steer a truck in a quarry, were also noted.
“This has been an exceptionally active year for Volvo,” said Mike Osenga, publisher of Diesel Progress International and Diesel Progress North American. “One of the criteria for our annual Newsmaker of the Year is what company are people talking about in the off-highway, on-highway, stationary and marine markets?
“Volvo was certainly a company people were talking about. A lot of new machines, new engines, alternative engines, management changes and certainly the YouTube videos created all sorts of interest in Volvo, as well as the engine and engine-powered equipment markets around the world.”
The Diesel Progress International Newsmaker of the Year Award was inaugurated in 2008 to honor the company, person, product, technology or industry trend that made in the most news in the heavy-duty industrial engine and equipment markets during the previous calendar year. These markets include on-highway and off-highway vehicles and equipment stationary engine-powered installations such as power generation, oil & gas, pumps, compressors, and marine applications.
Established in 1982 (as the High Speed Diesel Report), Diesel Progress International is published nine times a year and covers virtually anything powered by industrial and commercial diesel, gasoline or natural gas engines, as well as related powertrain, hydraulic and power systems products, technologies and industry news.
