Iberdrola Wins Energy Intelligence 2013 Award for Leadership in New Energy

Energy Intelligence announced today that Spanish company Iberdrola is the winner of its 2013 Award for Leadership in New Energy. The award recognizes a company that has made a significant contribution in leading the transition from traditional fossil fuels to alternative energy forms. Iberdrola, selected for its commitment to developing renewable energy over the past decade, says it has allocated €25 billion ($33 billion) to the development of renewables, and that this is the highest figure ever invested by a company in this field on the basis of known data.

The award will be presented to Iberdrola on October 1, 2013, at the close of the first full day of the 34th Annual Oil & Money Conference in London, organized by Energy Intelligence and the International Herald Tribune. A reception in its honor will immediately follow.

The award´s selection process began with the Energy Intelligence editorial team compiling a list of nominees, involving a cross-section of utilities, energy companies, government agencies and others. The winner was then chosen by a selection committee comprised of independent experts in new energy from the business world, complemented by senior energy executives and government officials that act as advisors to Energy Intelligence.

“As the top ranking utility in our annual Top 100 rankings, Iberdrola is a worthy recipient for the Award for Leadership in New Energy,” said David Pike, Editor of EI New Energy, Energy Intelligence’s carbon and renewables information service. “On behalf of the selection committee and Energy Intelligence, I would like to offer our congratulations to Iberdrola on this achievement.”

Iberdrola, headed by Chairman and CEO Ignacio S. Galán, is one of the largest European utilities, and has led the way globally in moving toward low-carbon electricity generation. The company is a world leader in wind energy, particularly through Iberdrola Renewables, headed by Renewable Energy Business Director Xabier Viteri Solaun. The company is the world’s largest renewable energy company outside of China. It has consistently had the lowest emissions levels among European utilities and has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (FTSE4Good).

Iberdrola´s long history of low-carbon generation started in 1901 in Spain with the creation of precursor hydro company Hidroelectrica Iberica. A century later, in 2001, Iberdrola began a decade of intense growth – including acquisition of the UK’s Scottish Power and US company Energy East – while reinforcing its green energy footprint, with Iberdrola Renewables as its main expansion vehicle, mostly in Spain, the US and the UK.

In all, the company operates 46 gigawatts of generating capacity worldwide, 60% of which is carbon-free. Of this, non-hydro renewables, mostly wind, account for 31%, hydro for 22% and nuclear for 7%. In Spain, 72% of its capacity is carbon-free.

Iberdrola also placed first in the 2012“Top 100 Green Utilities” ranking EI New Energy. This assessed and ranked 100 leading utilities, accounting for 55% of global capacity, according to their carbon emissions and renewable energy capacity.

The inaugural Award for Leadership in New Energy was presented to the UAE´s Masdar, represented by H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber, at Oil & Money 2012.
