BERLIN (Reuters) - A third of Europe's road tunnels failed safety tests carried out by Germany's ADAC motorists' association, the organisation said on Tuesday.
Of the 31 tunnels tested, ADAC singled out the Cernobbiotunnel near Lake Como in northern Italy as being particularlydangerous, lacking, it said, emergency equipment and clearlymarked escape routes. It is 2.4 km long.
"You can only hope that politicians get on with refittingprogrammes as quickly as possible and invest in safety,"Nicolas Adunka, head of the ADAC tunnel test, told ReutersTelevision.
The winner of the tests was a 1.3 km-long tunnel nearAndorra la Vella in the Alpine principality.
