New Netradar Application Lets Consumers to Compare Competing Mobile Operators and Devices

Aalto University has launched Netradar, a new free mobile application to measure mobile connections and devices providing the widest set of measurements and analysis of any measurement system. The app measures quality in terms of download and upload speed, latency, and signal strength, even network problems and the performance of individual brands of smart phones and tablets. The results are scientifically verified. By using Netradar, an end user can compare the performance of his own operator and device to the competing offerings.

Mobile device users can download the Netradar app for Android, iOS, Meego, Symbian and Windows Phone. The maps and analysis are available at www.netradar.org

The goal of Netradar, a free platform for crowdsourcing, is to create a global map of mobile Internet networks. The system brings new statistics and features all the time. The industry, operators, regulators, vendors and consultants, benefit from the data enabling them to make the mobile Internet services better for everyone.

“We want people to see the real and up-to-date coverage and quality of mobile networks around the world, but also the performance of different mobile devices. We already have a million measurements from our users around the world, and identified hundreds of different mobile devices. All data is anonymous, we are only interested to analyze and present technical performance details”, says professor Jukka Manner, who leads the development of the Netradar service at Finland’s Aalto University.

The system is based on years of active research on mobile Internet services at Aalto University. After an initial trial in Finland in 2012, the global system is now distributed around the world.
