Launched today in Beerse, the Janssen Diabetes Forum (www.janssendiabetesforum.com) is a novel medical education initiative, which has been developed to contribute to the understanding of the latest developments in the management of type 2 diabetes. Aimed at health care professionals, the Janssen Diabetes Forum has been set up by Janssen Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Content is developed on the advice of an independent Scientific Committee of international experts from 8 different European countries to ensure scientific accuracy of the data presented.
Features will include a series of educational tools such as a digital slide library, materials from key educational events in diabetes, upcoming events and videos. The forum also allows physicians to compile their own diabetes slide decks.
John Wilding, Head of the Department of Obesity and Endocrinology at the University of Liverpool, UK and member of the Steering committee of the Janssen Diabetes Forum comments: "The launch of the Janssen Diabetes Forum will help to educate physicians in the management of the escalating diabetes problem. It is estimated that the diabetes population is expected to grow to over 550 million in less than 20 years, emphasising the importance and need for up to date educational tools."
The collection of modules serves as the underpinning basis for the Janssen Diabetes Forum educational programme and examples include an introduction to the pathophysiology of diabetes, along with an explanation of the current management and unmet needs in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Additionally key information is detailed on the role of the kidney and glucose reabsorption within type 2 diabetes.

About the Janssen Diabetes Forum Scientific Committee Members
John Wilding is Head of the Department of Obesity and Endocrinology at the University of Liverpool, UK. Professor Wilding has published over 200 original papers, chapters and review articles related to his clinical and laboratory research interests in type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Bernard Charbonnel, MD, is a Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the University of Nantes (FRANCE). He has published more than 300 original and/or review scientific papers, most recently in journals such as The Lancet, Diabetes Care, Diabetologia, Diabetic Medicine, The Journal of The American College of Cardiology, and The Journal of Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Stefano Del Prato is Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the School of Medicine, University of Pisa and Chief of the Section of Diabetes, University of Pisa, Italy. He is Vice President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) for the period of 2011-2014 and the incoming President of Italian Society of Diabetology.
Kamlesh Khunti is a Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine, at the University of Leicester, UK. He leads a research group in the Department of Health Sciences and is undertaking research in the early identification and interventions in people with diabetes and those at high risk of diabetes.
Manuel Puig Domingo is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, a position he has held since 2010. He is also Head of the service of Endocrinology and Nutrition at the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, Badalona, Spain. He is the author of 93 peer-reviewed papers, 18 reviews and 22 book chapters in the field of endocrinology and nutrition.
Guntram Schernthaner has been Professor of Medicine at the University of Vienna, Austria since 1987, and Head of the Department of Medicine I at the Rudolfstiftung Hospital in Vienna since 1988. He is the recipient of a Bertram Award of the German Diabetes Association and the Albert Renold Medal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
Professor Jochen Seufert is a Professor of Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetology and the Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetology at the University of Freiburg, Germany. He is also Assistant Professor and Chief of the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Wuerzburg Medical School since 2011. He is a reviewer for several journals in the field including Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Cell Metabolism and Diabetologia.
Luc Van Gaal is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism at Antwerp University Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium. Professor Van Gaal has published more than 220 papers in international medical journals, mainly in the areas of general endocrinology, obesity, diabetes and lipids and has contributed to a number of textbooks about obesity.
