Bentley Institute Press Announces Second Printing of ´Architectural Geometry´

Bentley Institute Press, publisher of cutting-edge university
textbooks and professional reference works for the architectural,
engineering, construction (AEC), geospatial, and educational
communities, today announced the second printing of "Architectural
Geometry," the newest addition to its growing list of titles.
"Architectural Geometry," which was authored by a team of experts from
the Vienna University of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, is the first and only textbook to successfully integrate
the disciplines of geometry and architecture. This single,
comprehensive volume is written for architects, future architects, and
other AEC professionals pursuing the study of design, including
advanced 3D and generative design techniques.

Gary Hack, Paley professor of architecture and planning and dean
of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, said, "As
architectural practice increasingly pursues new approaches to form and
the integration of design with materials and assemblies, it is clear
that a strong background in geometry is a requirement.

"The new book ´Architectural Geometry´ is perfect for students and
teachers of architecture, practicing architects, and other
professionals seeking an in-depth understanding of geometric
principles and their integral relationship to the world of design. Its
content is fundamental and will be not only relevant but essential for
many years to come. I´ve asked that copies be added to the PennDesign
library and firmly believe this singular work belongs in the library
of every high school, college, and university offering architecture
and engineering design as part of its curriculum - as well as in the
offices of architectural and design organizations around the globe."

Authors Helmut Pottmann, Andreas Asperl, Michael Hofer, and Axel
Kilian drew on their professional experiences to craft a textbook that
crosses numerous boundaries. Providing more than 700 pages richly
illustrated with hundreds of full-color images of built architecture,
architectural projects and artwork, plus color illustrations of
geometric concepts, this book takes readers from basic to advanced
geometry, then leads them to the cutting edge of research in
architectural geometry. Topics typically reserved for a mathematically
focused audience are addressed in an easily understandable way. These
include central concepts on freeform curves and surfaces, differential
geometry, kinematic geometry, mesh processing, digital reconstruction,
and optimization of shapes.

Miles Ritter, digital media coordinator, Princeton University
School of Architecture, said, "´Architectural Geometry´ is a superior,
comprehensive survey of geometric modeling for architecture filled
with stunning illustrations of unparalleled precision and clarity. The
authors are at the forefront of research into advanced modeling
technologies and the underlying geometrical principles upon which they
are based, and it thus contains, particularly in the later chapters,
advanced topics such as shape optimization, PQ meshes, and surface
development that are at the cutting edge of the discipline.

"For those involved in the construction and refinement of
geometrical pipelines for architectural modeling and production, I
expect it will become the standard reference. ´Architectural Geometry´
is not just the best text of its kind - it is unique."

Added Dr. Andre Brown, professor, Liverpool University, and former
president of the Education and Research in Computer-Aided
Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe) organization, "This is a
carefully considered, well-structured, balanced, and informative book
on constructive geometry and its application to design for the built
environment in a contemporary setting. It mixes theoretical ideas,
how-to advice, and real-world examples, and will appeal to a wide
range of potential users, from students to educators and
practitioners."

About the Authors

Helmut Pottmann is a professor of geometry at Vienna University of
Technology, where he directs the research group Geometric Modeling and
Industrial Geometry at the Institute of Discrete Mathematics and
Geometry. Andreas Asperl studied mathematics and descriptive geometry
at Vienna University of Technology, where he has held a faculty
position since 1983. Michael Hofer is a post-doctoral researcher at
Vienna University of Technology. Axel Kilian studied architecture and
specialized in design and computation for a Master of Science, a
Ph.D., and a post-doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology.
