Professor Carlo Maria Croce Joins the Board of Nerviano Medical Sciences

Today the Board of Directors of Nerviano Medical Sciences resolved upon the appointment of Professor Carlo Maria Croce to the facilities´ board, to cover the office of Vice President. Croce is one of the most highly recognized and awarded Italian researchers in the world, and is currently involved in studying what are known as microRNAs and their role in oncology.

Croce has been authorised to direct the centre´s scientific activities, and will be able to develop specific, avant-garde research projects at the Nerviano labs, with the focus being primarily on oncology. The appointment of Croce today constitutes an important step in NMS´s plan to optimise its activities and reposition itself in the international sphere. It also attests to the superior quality and high-profile nature of the research carried out at NMS on a daily basis.

Holding a degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Rome "´ La Sapienza, Croce has worked in both research and instruction, primarily at American universities, and currently holds the position of Director of the Genetics Institute at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Ohio State University.

His scientific research has led him to make some extremely important discoveries in the field of oncology, particularly with regard to the genetics of leukaemia. For several years he has also dedicated his time to studying the role of microRNAs in cancer growth. His work encompasses the broadest range of scientific output a single lab has ever produced on the relationship between cancer and this class of regulators. These accomplishments also explain why he is number one in the rankings of the 715 Italian scientists having the most impact on medical research around the world "´ a list which was put together in recent months by the Virtual Italian Academy.

He has authored or co-authored over 600 publications for scientific journals and has received a number of international awards. He is a member of the prestigious American Academy of Sciences. Based on his merit in the field of science, he was also awarded the honour of Cavaliere di Gran Croce ("Knight Grand Cross") by the President of the Italian Republic.
