Naisscent Capital/Ucitsfunds.eu, a leading alternative Ucits funds specialist, analyses more than 1000 single-manager Ucits hedge funds and absolute return funds, and 100 alternative Ucits fund of funds in its latest fund report.
The monthly published fund report is the largest source for EU-regulated alternative Ucits funds. The single funds report is a comprehensive analysis of 1000 funds, free of charge and available only to professional investors at ucitsfunds.eu.
Alternative Ucits funds have grown substantially since the 2008 financial crisis. In 2009, 160 funds have been launched, followed by a record number of 350 funds in 2010 and 150 funds so far this year.
The report shows that Luxembourg has attracted most of the business, with 555 funds domiciled in Luxembourg. After Luxembourg comes Ireland with 225 funds and France with 130.
The most popular investment strategy is long/short equity, with 220 funds. Next is fixed income, with 185 absolute return funds, and equity market neutral, with 70 funds.
During the 2008 financial crisis alternative Ucits funds in the report lost only 11.9%, whereas the MSCI World lost 40.7% and, the liquid offshore hedge funds index HFRX lost 23.1%. Currently in 2011, the MSCI World lost 12.2 %, the HFRX Index lost 8.2% and alternative UCITS lost 4.6%.
The report shows that 85% of single funds report daily prices. While the Ucits regulation requires at least bi-weekly liquidity terms, almost all funds offer daily or weekly liquidity.
Luigi Amato, publisher of the report and partner at Naisscent Capital, concludes: "Alternative Ucits are under-researched. A fund with 14.5% YTD performance, 5.6% volatility, a maximum loss of 3.9% over a 2 year track record, managed by a $7.5 billion asset manager, and daily liquidity should attract more than only EUR 10 million. It shows that our report is highly required."
