Wall Street cuts losses; materials sector up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks trimmed losses and the Dow briefly turned higher on Wednesday, with the S&P materials sector advancing.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 4.85 points, or 0.04 percent, at 12,013.78. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 4.22 points, or 0.33 percent, at 1,289.55. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 4.69 points, or 0.17 percent, at 2,679.18.
