UK home gas use sinks due to higher energy efficiency

LONDON (Reuters) - British household gas demand has fallen sharply in four years mainly due to improved home energy efficiency, according to a report published on Wednesday.

Users could save another 6 billion pounds ($9.73 billion) until 2015 if they lost less energy at home, the report added.

Saving more energy in the home through better insulation and more efficient boilers has already contributed to a 17 percent decline in gas demand in British households since 2006, the study compiled by the Center for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) for UK utility Centrica showed.

Additional factors to declining domestic gas demand are household income -- influenced by economic activity -- and people's awareness of climate change and the environment which influences their energy consuming behavior.

Insulating homes more thoroughly to avoid heat escaping unnecessarily could save domestic gas users around 4.3 billion pounds over five years, while fitting more efficient boilers would contribute another 1.9 billion pounds in savings, cutting bills by over 6 billion pounds, the study said.

"The message is clear: in a global environment of rising commodity prices the most effective way for households to reduce costs is through basic energy efficiency measures," said Jonathan Thurlwell, director of competition economics at CEBR.
