The speculation surrounding Opel's surprise at the IAA is finally
over: Flextreme is the name of the innovative, sporty monocab concept
with a completely new, environmentally friendly E-Flex electric
propulsion concept. It was unveiled on Monday evening in the
Bockenheimer Depot. E-Flex marks a milestone in the development of the
electric car. The Flextreme travels 55 kilometers on electricity,
however if required, it can cover up to 715 km without stopping thanks
to its small turbo-diesel engine, which recharges the battery as
needed. According to the European test cycle (ECE R101), this engine's
emissions are expected to be less than 40 g CO2/km. Most commuters in
Europe could travel everyday with the Flextreme without producing any
CO2 emissions. Opel also highlights others innovative solutions with
the monocab concept car, such as rear-hinged back doors (FlexDoor(R)),
a large transparent roof and two tailgate doors that open from the
side and swing upwards. The big surprise is the high-tech Segway
electric personal transporters stowed beneath the FlexLoad(R) cargo
floor.
