CLEVELAND (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was discharged on Thursday from a Cleveland hospital after being treated for an upset stomach, hospital officials said.
Carter, who turns 86 on Friday, has recovered from a gastric viral infection and will resume his schedule with a meeting this week in Washington, the MetroHealth Medical Centre and The Carter Centre said in a joint statement.
Carter was rushed by ambulance to the hospital on Tuesday from Cleveland-Hopkins Airport after falling ill while on a flight from Atlanta. He travelled to Cleveland to attend a book signing for his latest book, "White House Diary."
President Barack Obama was among those who telephoned Carter while he was in the hospital.
Carter has been active in international diplomacy since serving as president from 1977 to 1981. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. His Carter Centre works to promote peace, human rights and global health.
