Wall St holds gains after home sales data

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks held large gains on Friday after data showed sales of new U.S. single-family homes were flat in August.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 172.06 points, or 1.61 percent, to 10,834.48. The Standard & Poor's 500 <.SPX> gained 19.48 points, or 1.73 percent, to 1,144.31. The Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> added 39.18 points, or 1.68 percent, to 2,366.26.

Wall Street opened higher after new orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods, excluding transportation, rose in August and business spending rebounded strongly.
