Vidacare, the leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of
advanced intraosseous technology, today announced the launch of
OnControl(TM) Aspiration System for hematology / oncology bone marrow
aspiration procedures. With its lithium-powered EZ-IO(R) driver,
Vidacare's system represents the first effort in decades to improve
the speed, control and patient comfort of the bone marrow aspiration
procedure.
Expanding upon its innovative technology combining a
battery-powered drill and specialty needles to rapidly and safely
access the intraosseous space, Vidacare has developed a system that
significantly advances the current state-of-the-art in obtaining bone
marrow aspirations from patients and donors. Necessary for the
diagnosis and management of lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma and other
hematological disorders, bone marrow aspiration has historically been
very painful for patients. The Vidacare system enables the clinician
performing the procedure to quickly and precisely enter the
intraosseous space, with minimal patient discomfort.
"The bone marrow aspiration procedure has remained essentially
unchanged for decades," explains Philip Faris, Jr., Vidacare's CEO and
president. "Studies have shown that even with the use of local
anesthesia, the majority of patients undergoing this procedure
experience transient pain, which is severe in nearly 20% of patients.
Our goal in developing OnControl(TM) Aspiration System was to utilize
new technology to increase the efficiency of the aspiration procedure
while reducing patient discomfort."
OnControl(TM) Aspiration System uses the EZ-IO lithium-powered
driver, connected to a patented 15 gauge, 68 mm needle with
specialized bi-beveled cutting tips. The system includes an aspiration
tray designed to simplify needle set access and usage. The catheter
features a standard luer-lock connector. Vidacare has created a
training package designed to provide a realistic sensation of needle
placement.

Vidacare(R) is the leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer
of advanced intraosseous (IO) access technology for multiple
diagnostic, monitoring, and therapeutic applications. The company's
initial product line, the EZ-IO(R) System by Vidacare, serves the
emergent care industry as the world's only lithium-battery powered
drill and patented needle set for gaining immediate vascular access
when conventional IV access is difficult or impossible. Vidacare's
OnControl(TM) suite of hematology/oncology products includes a power
driver and specially-designed needle sets for bone marrow aspiration
and biopsy. The OnControl(TM) Aspiration System by Vidacare represents
the first in this series of products and will be commercially
available in June 2007. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, Vidacare
was founded in 2001 and owns the exclusive rights to innovative IO
technologies developed at the University of Texas Health Science
