Nigerian TV channel reports President Yar'Adua dead

ABUJA (Reuters) - Private Nigerian television channel Silverbird on Wednesday reported that ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua has died.

Information Minister Dora Akunyili told Reuters she could not verify the television report. Presidency officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Under the terms of the constitution, Acting President Goodluck Jonathan would be sworn in as head of state in the event of Yar'Adua's demise. Jonathan would then appoint a new vice president and the pair would complete the unexpired term.
