Obama adviser: confident Senate to pass energy bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's top energy adviser, Carol Browner, said on Monday she was confident that the U.S. Senate would pass comprehensive energy and climate change legislation.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a climate change bill on Friday that would require large companies, including utilities and manufacturers, to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases associated with global warming by 17 percent by 2020 and 83 percent by 2050, from 2005 levels.

Prospects of passage in the Senate, however, are unclear.

Browner declined to speculate on the potential timing of Senate action.
