LONDON (Reuters) - E.ON UK said on Tuesday it and its partners had agreed to go ahead with the London Array offshore wind project, after the financial crisis had endangered the world's biggest wind project.
Frank Mastiaux, chief executive of E.ON Climate and Renewables, told reporters the consortium would invest 2.2 billion euros ($3 billion) for the first phase of the project.
The consortium includes Denmark's Dong Energy A/S and Abu Dhabi's state-owned green energy firm Masdar.
He also said the wind farm should provide the first power by 2012, possibly in time for the London Olympics Games. Siemens AG would provide the wind turbines for the first phase.
The announcement came after the UK government raised support for offshore wind farms in its 2009 budget.
