TOKYO (Reuters) - Ukraine is closest to a deal with Japan among countries Tokyo is negotiating with to buy its first emissions rights through a government-level trading scheme under the Kyoto Protocol, a source familiar with the talks said on Monday.
Japan has negotiated with about 10 eastern and central European countries on such emission credits, called AAUs, in the past two years to help it offset its own greenhouse gas emissions surpluses.
"I understand Ukraine is the closest," the source told Reuters in a telephone interview. It declined to say if there were any other similar deals close to been done or how much and at what cost Japan would buy emission rights from Ukraine.
