House approves $787 bln stimulus, Senate next

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday easily passed a $787 billion stimulus plan of spending and tax cuts aimed at rescuing the struggling economy, setting up a vote in the Senate expected later in the day.

The compromise package was approved by a vote of 246-183 but with no Republican support, dashing President Barack Obama's quest for bipartisan support that he had hoped would end the gridlock that has gripped Congress for years.
