NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow and the S&P 500 briefly turned positive on Friday, while the Nasdaq added to slight gains, following news that President Barack Obama would announce next week a plan to stem home foreclosures.
Even so, persistent worries about the health of the banking sector limited a broad recovery.
Investors also are also focused on the upcoming vote in the U.S. Congress on the $787 billion economic stimulus package.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 5.73 points, or 0.07 percent, at 7,927.03. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 0.22 points, or 0.03 percent, at 835.41. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 4.84 points, or 0.31 percent, at 1,546.55.
