Anyone traveling this weekend will have something to look forward to, because when they go to fill up the gas tank, the gas will cost less than they expected. Gas prices have dropped about 1%, while the price per barrel of crude has declined 9% during the past month.
According to data from Boletín Petrolero, this is the third consecutive week of declines, and it happens to coincide with the puente de la Virgen de agosto, a major holiday period in Spain that usually sees higher traffic on the roads as people travel to festivals parties held in various towns throughout the Spanish peninsula.
The Director General of Traffic predicts 6.4 million travelers will hit the highways. The price of 95 octane gas is on average 1.337 euros per liter, which means that to fill up a 55-liter tank will cost around 75.53 euros. By way of comparison, this would have cost 64.62 euros a year ago, a difference of 13.7%. Seven days ago, a liter of 95 octane unleaded gas cost 1.354 euros per liter, two cents less than the week before. And regular gas was 1.280 euros, also two cents less than what it costs at the end of July.
Who is going to see the most gains? You could spend less on gas if you live in La Rioja, where it costs 1.28 cents per liter on average. In Huesca or Navarra gas is 1.26. Not counting the Canary Islands or Ceuta and Melilla where various taxes cause significant price fluctuation, usually lowering it. It will cost you more to fill a tank in Madrid, whose average price is 1.359. In Barcelona it is 1.357, and in Gerona it is 1.352.
