PRISTINA (Reuters) - Prime Minister Hashim Thaci's Democratic Party of Kosovo led his rival Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) with 31 percent of votes in Sunday's election, according to exit polls made public after voting ended.
If results of the exit polls in Kosovo's first national elections since 2008 independence are confirmed, Thaci would need support from other parties to form a coalition government.
The ex-coalition partner LDK garnered 25 percent. The poll of more than 2,000 voters has a sampling margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
Both parties seek European Union and NATO membership for Kosovo, continued privatisation of state enterprises, and talks with Serbia, but have given few concrete details about their programmes to boost one of the poorest economies in Europe.
