Three dead as car speeds into shopping street in Austrian city of Graz

VIENNA (Reuters) - The driver of a sport utility vehicle killed three people and injured 34 others when he ploughed at high speed into a crowded shopping street in the Austrian city of Graz on Saturday, police said.

The driver, a 26-year-old Austrian of Bosnian origin, was detained. Police said there was currently no reason to suspect any terrorist motive, and that they believed the men was suffering family problems.

"I can confirm that the ... driver has been detained without offering any resistance," a local police spokesman said, adding that more than 60 police had been at the scene.

Eyewitnesses cited by the public broadcaster ORF said the vehicle had been travelling at around 100 kph (62 mph). ORF reported that no explosives had been found in the car.

Pictures on local media websites showed a green SUV with a severely damaged front and smashed broken lights, and a scarf hanging from it.
