TOKYO (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7 struck northern Japan on Saturday, NHK television reported.
There were no immediate reports of casualties and notsunami warning was issued but NHK said Japan's high-speedbullet trains had stopped running in the area.
The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.9 andsaid the epicentre was 390 km (240 miles) north of Tokyo.
