MOGADISHU (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded at a busy road junction in the centre of the Somali capital on Sunday, apparently targeting a convoy of vehicles carrying officials, witnesses said.
A Reuters photographer said he could see three people lying motionless near the wreckage of four burning cars.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the attack bore the hallmarks of al Qaeda-linked insurgents who have kept up a campaign of guerrilla-style bombings and killings since they were pushed out of the capital under military pressure.
"A car bomb hit a convoy of official cars as they passed through the 'Kilometre 4' junction," shopkeeper Ibrahim Hussein told Reuters.
Gunfire rang out in the Kilometre 4 neighbourhood, Mogadishu's commercial and administrative hub, immediately after the blast. The Turkish Embassy is located about 100 metres from the blast site.
