Gunman fires at university near Chicago

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A gunman opened fire in a classroom at Northern Illinois University outside Chicago on Thursday and witnesses told local media that several people had been wounded.

A local newspaper said the gunman was armed with a shotgunand a pistol. It added that police radio traffic indicated thatthe man was "down."

Another local media report said police had the gunman incustody.

One student told local radio that roughly 140 students werein a geology classroom when the man opened fire. Otherwitnesses said bloodied victims were hit by buckshot.

A woman outside the classroom said students fled in terror."One guy said, there's someone shooting," she said.
