BRUSSELS (Reuters) - About 500 flights were canceled as an ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano closed parts of the airspace above the United Kingdom, European air traffic controller Eurocontrol said on Tuesday.
Eurocontrol said there was a strong possibility the cloud would now move to parts of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, but the impact on flights was expected to be limited.
An eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland sent plumes of smoke and ash into the atmosphere, raising concerns that European air traffic might face a similar disruption to 2010 when tens of thousands of flights were grounded after the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano.
