Magnitude 5.3 quake shakes Chile - USGS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck 45 miles (72 km) north-northeast of the central Chilean port city of Valparaiso, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Wednesday.

Reuters witnesses said the tremor shook Chile's capital, Santiago, about 75 miles (120 km) miles to the east. Quakes are common in Chile.

The quake was 15 miles (24 km) deep, the USGS said.
