Paula strengthens into hurricane off Mexican coast

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Paula strengthened into a hurricane on Tuesday as it moved northwest toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Paula, the 16th named storm of the busy 2010 Atlantic hurricane season and the ninth hurricane, was packing top sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, making it a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity.

It was located about 230 miles south/southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.
