ALGIERS (Reuters) - Two people were killed and several wounded in Algeria Wednesday when a suicide bomber drove a vehicle packed with explosives into a military convoy, a newspaper and a local resident said.
Oil and gas exporter Algeria has been fighting insurgents linked to al Qaeda for a long time. The violence has been reduced dramatically in the past few years, but the militants still mount sporadic attacks.
The attack took place near the settlement of Zemmouri, about 40 km (25 miles) east of the capital in a region that has traditionally been an insurgent stronghold.
"There were at least two people killed," said a local resident. El Watan newspaper reported on its Internet site that two people were killed and nine wounded. It did not say if the dead included the bomber.
"It was a suicide attack against a military convoy," a security source told Reuters.
Algerian security forces killed 10 Islamist rebels in the same area last week, according to local newspaper reports.
