Hurricane Earl gains steam, upgraded to Category 4

MIAMI (Reuters) - Hurricane Earl strengthened into a Category 4 storm on Monday as it moved across Atlantic waters northeast of Puerto Rico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The Miami-based center said Earl, the second major hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic season, was packing top sustained winds of close to 135 miles per hour.
