Rock slide on Portugal beach kills one, 4 missing

LISBON (Reuters) - At least one beachgoer was crushed to death by a rock slide Friday on a beach in Portugal's southern Algarve region and several were missing, rescue workers at the popular tourism destination said.

"We have one confirmed dead and we have information that four people are buried under the rock that collapsed. One is being taken out now, but we don't know if the person is alive," civil protection commander Artur Ricardo told Reuters by telephone from the region.

Another two people were seriously injured, he said, adding that the nationalities of those hurt were not immediately known.

The incident occurred around midday at Albufeira, one of Algarve's top beachgoing spots.
