ETA claims responsibility for car bomb killings

MADRID (Reuters) - Basque separatists ETA has claimed responsibility for three car bomb attacks attributed to the armed group over the last two months, according to a statement sent to Basque media Sunday.

In the statement, published in Basque-language newspaper Gara, ETA discussed and justified the three attacks in detail and vowed to continue its campaign of violence, saying police attempts to stop the bombings were "futile."

"The only thing which has proved to be sterile and futile over the last few weeks and years, is police repression," ETA said.

Spanish media had blamed ETA for the bombs -- which killed three policemen and injured 46 people -- despite the group's weakening by a string of arrests, including that of its suspected top commander, Jurdan Martitegi in April.

The separatists are held responsible for more than 800 deaths in the past 40 years in their campaign to carve out an independent Basque homeland in Northern Spain and Southern France.
