ANTANANARIVO (Reuters) - Madagascar's opposition said on Saturday it was still waiting for the country's president to step down after a four-hour deadline given earlier in the day passed without incident.
"We are waiting for the moment. If the president decides to leave, we'll wait for his call before heading to the palace for a democratic handover. If we don't receive the call something will happen," said an aide to opposition leader Andry Rajoelina.
She said the military would not be involved and assured Malagasies there would be a peaceful outcome to the stand-off.
The political crisis has been running since the beginning of 2009, killing more than 135 people, damaging Madagascar's image as a sound destination for foreign investment and crippling the island's $390 million (279 million pounds) a year tourist industry.
