U.S. House rejects temporary spy law extension


    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected a Democratic measure that would have extended for three weeks an expiring spy law, in a vote that was a victory for President George W. Bush.

    By a vote of 191-229, the House rejected the temporaryextension that Bush threatened to veto. The president backs abill passed by the Senate on Tuesday that would shieldtelecommunication companies from potentially billions ofdollars in civil damages and expand the government's powers totrack suspected terrorists.
