The Dow Jones industrial average gained 120.49 points, or 1.00 percent, to 12,169.43. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 12.17 points, or 0.95 percent, to 1,291.73. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 11.86 points, or 0.44 percent, to 2,687.24.
