BP attaching cap to damaged Gulf oil well: reports


    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - BP Plc struggled on Thursday night to place a containment cap atop the damaged well that has been gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico, cable TV networks CNN and MSNBC said.

    Live television pictures showed the cylindrical device being placed on top of the crippled wellhead assembly as oil and gas continued to billow up.

    BP has said that once the cap has been secured to the wellhead assembly, it will be a least a day before the company knows if it will work to successfully stem the leak.
