S&P 500 falls one percent, energy sector weighs



    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended losses on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 off more than 1 percent, weighed down by the energy sector as crude oil futures slid 2 percent.

    Earlier, data showed U.S. consumer confidence fell more than expected in July.

    The Dow Jones industrial average fell 89.18 points, or 0.98 percent, to 9,019.33. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 10.70 points, or 1.09 percent, to 971.48. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 16.71 points, or 0.85 percent, to 1,951.18.
