Dow gains, but techs curb Nasdaq

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow rose on Tuesday as investors bought into defensive shares, including Pfizer , while energy companies climbed as oil hit a six-month high.

But the S&P 500 inched lower and the Nasdaq fell as financial and technology shares declined after leading the recent market run-up from 12-year lows.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 50.34 points, or 0.60 percent, to close unofficially at 8,469.11. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index shed 0.89 of a point, or 0.10 percent, to 908.35. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 15.32 points, or 0.88 percent, to 1,715.92.
