Nasdaq dips on tech, but Dow and S&P up


    NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Nasdaq briefly turned negative on Friday as a sell-off in the shares of chipmakers and other technology bellwethers, including Apple Inc , derailed an earlier advance.

    The pressure from tech also caused both the Dow and the S&P 500 to pare some of their initial gains.

    Tech has been one of the hard-charging sectors in the market's run-up from the 12-year lows of early March, and profit-taking has been anticipated for some time.

    The Dow Jones industrial average was up 51.30 points, or 0.61 percent, at 8,461.15. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 6.29 points, or 0.69 percent, at 913.68. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 3.57 points, or 0.21 percent, at 1,712.67.

    After the market open the Nasdaq had risen more than 1 percent.
