Op-ed: What politicians can we trust?

After a period of scandal and corruption for Spain's well-known politicians, they will earn either the country's confidence or its skepticism through their levels of coherence and commitment.

Our political representatives should know that a lack of collaboration and demagoguery hurt their images. Faint memories of what Rubalcaba has done since the opposition won says little in their favor. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party leader promised a "useful opposition," but he took to the hills during recent reforms as if he had forgotten the kind of responsibility that he demanded from Rajoy when he was Deputy Prime Minister.

Citizens are monitoring the government's capacity for making unpopular decisions and the support that the opposition offers in order to put the people's interest before the interest of the party. The world will be watching, too.
