Op-ed: Closing companies to clean up shop
The government will do away with 80 companies and 154 consultants. The plan is to eliminate, merge and divest in public companies.
This shows that there is still some fat to trim, with many companies without duties and others, such as the Public Rental Company, a department of the Ministry of Public Works, never met its established goals. Saving a million euros is only the first result of streamlining it.
Most important, regional governments need to continue down this path as well. They are habitually responsible for bulking up national government spending with their public company expenses. Also, they are getting rid of 153 consultants.
It looks there were more chefs than cooks. Perhaps because they were all trying to stew up comfortable salaries for themselves. This is a very common practice that ought to be eradicated.
