Op-ed: Power sector needs a set price tariffs
The government's plan for the power sector will ask consumers, the State and companies to share the burden of bearing extra operating costs. The Supremo, Spain's highest court, has routed tariff freezes that were applied for this quarter and last quarter.
The costs ought to have repercussions, but the Government is reluctant to do so with the Andalusia elections just around the corner. At the least, we can rejoice in the fact that the sanctity of the legal system will be respected and the accumulated tariff deficit debt will not be forgiven. This action would have put a stop to court proceedings retrospectively.
Among other measures, some things we could see are: imposing a tax on nuclear and hydroelectric power, putting a stop to renewables, cleaning up costs that do not relate to power generation and controlling to whom and at what price companies sell power.
